Patent Foramen Ovale Closure Device

In June 2007, Cardica and Cook entered into an agreement to develop and commercialize a specialized device designed to close the patent foramen ovale (PFO), a relatively common heart defect affecting approximately 15 to 20 percent of the general population.

People with PFO often are asymptomatic, but are at greater risk for stroke and systemic embolism because of the potential formation of blood clots. Today, PFOs are treated by the use of a blood thinning medication (aspirin or warfarin) to prevent blood clots, or the PFO is closed through open heart surgery or alternative transcatheter closure procedures.

Cardica’s catheter-based PFO Closure Device has several key features including:

  • Actual physical closure of the opening in the heart
  • Minimal amount of foreign material left behind
  • Simple user interface
  • Ability to place it through a small introducer sheath
  • Scalability

PAS-Port® Proximal Anastomosis System

Century Medical, Inc. markets and distributes the PAS-Port® system in Japan. Since the February 2004 launch of the PAS-Port system in Japan, Cardica has gained over 20 percent market share of all proximal anastomoses performed using a vein bypass graft during CABG surgery in that country. In April 2007, based on the success of this partnership, Cardica and Century extended their distribution agreement by five years, to continue through 2014. Through May 2008, Century has trained over 380 Japanese cardiovascular surgeons in over 250 hospitals.
